About Leicester

Leicester is the largest city situated Leicestershire, in the East Midlands. Lying on the banks of the River Soar and the edge of the National Forest Leicester has a population of approximately 330,000 residents, making it the 10th largest city in the UK. Rail and water ways in Leicester reveal a past which was dominated by industrial growth. In the 19th century Leicester had a reputation for engineering, shoe-making and hosiery manufacturing. Since the 1960's, which saw a decline in Leicester's manufacturing industries, the city has been redeveloped into a hub of financial and businesses, retail and leisure, with only a handful of engineering and textile business remaining. Companies that operate from Leicester include banking powerhouses Santander, Royal Bank of Scotland, Barclays Bank and the HSBC, to name but a few. The city is home to two major shopping centres - the Haymarket Shopping Centre and Highcross Leicester, as well as brand name department stores, including Fenwick, House or Fraser, John Lewis and Debenhams. Leicester is also a Univerisity town with major higher education facilities in University of Leicester and De Montford University. Loughborough University, with its strong tradition in sports, and sport and exercise science is located down the road in Loughborough.
