About Folkestone

Folkestone is a port town, located in Kent and located off the English Channel. With a growing population of over 45,000 Folkestone isn't the largest Kent town, but it is perhaps one of the most famous due illegal smuggling that took place between mainland Europe and England in the 18th century. Folkestone was once a resort town which introduce tourists and holiday makers to the seaside holiday experience. However, since the rise of the package holiday to the Med, Folkestone's tourist trade declined. Folkestone was also a major recruitment ground for workers of the Channel Tunnel construction in the 1980's and 1990's and, for some, the completed project still keeps them employed. Landmarks in the town include harbour and also the Leas, the cliffs that appear above the beach. Unlike the chalky white cliffs of Dover, the cliffs at Folkestone are made up of greensand and gault clay. The Kent Downs and the Folkestone White Horse, as well as Royal Military Canal are also just some of the places of interest in the area. Folkestone also has a long tradition of sport, including football, rugby and cricket, though no teams of real note have emerged from the area.
